After 20 years in operation, the flagship location of popular Atlanta brunch restaurant, Highland Bakery, is set to close its doors. The founder and CEO, Stacey Eames, took to social media to share the news with the eatery’s devoted customers. The closure comes as a result of the building being sold and the expiration of the business’ lease. Despite the bittersweet nature of the announcement, Eames expressed gratitude to customers for their unwavering support throughout the years, stating, Your support has been the lifeblood of our business, and we are honored to have been a part of your lives.

While the closure marks the end of an era for Highland Bakery’s primary location off Highland Avenue in Old Fourth Ward, fans of the brand need not worry. Eames assured patrons that the downtown location near Georgia State University and the sister coffee shop and cafe called Press & Grind in Virginia Highlands will remain open for business. Additionally, the company plans to focus on expanding its catering and specialty cake divisions, including a partnership with renowned International Cake Hall of Fame designer Karen Portaleo.

Highland Bakery’s closure is part of a disheartening trend affecting locally-owned Atlanta restaurants. Recent closures include Ammazza in Edgewood, Hodgepodge Coffee in Ormewood Park, and Henry’s Midtown Tavern in Midtown. Ash Parker, senior vice president at commercial real estate firm Richard Bowers & Co., attributes the struggles faced by small businesses to the rising prices of commercial space due to Atlanta’s growing popularity.

Despite the challenges, Eames remains optimistic about the future of Highland Bakery. She expressed excitement about the prospect of continuing to serve Atlanta’s beloved comfort food and expressed gratitude to the loyal customer base that has made Highland Bakery a fixture of the city’s dining scene. As the brand looks ahead, it strives to maintain its commitment to offering delicious meals, delectable treats, and heartwarming experiences to the community.

In a rapidly changing culinary landscape, the Highland Bakery closure serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by small businesses. As Atlanta’s appeal continues to rise, entrepreneurs and restaurateurs must navigate increasing commercial rental prices to ensure the longevity of their establishments. However, it is the continued support and patronage of loyal customers that ultimately fuels the success of these local gems, and Highland Bakery is no exception.

As the primary location prepares to bid farewell, Atlanta residents and visitors alike will cherish the memories and flavors that Highland Bakery has brought to their lives. The closing of the flagship store may indeed be bittersweet, but the spirit of Highland Bakery and its dedication to comfort food and delightful experiences will live on through its remaining locations. Atlanta can anticipate more delightful meals, yummy treats, and heartwarming moments as Highland Bakery embarks on its next chapter.
