Beloved Asian Elephant Dies at St. Louis Zoo Following Disturbance by Loose Dog
In a tragic incident at the St. Louis Zoo, a much-loved Asian elephant named Rani has passed away after being agitated by a loose dog. The zoo officials, deeply devastated by the loss, have requested the community’s thoughts and support during this difficult time.
The incident occurred on Friday when a small lost dog managed to enter a non-public area near the Elephant Barn. As the Elephant Care team worked to contain the canine, one of the elephants outside became agitated. The team swiftly moved Rani away from the disturbance, as she was already indoors having her dinner and had not seen the dog.
Although Rani was not in direct contact with the dog, the Elephant Care team noticed her becoming agitated in response to the vocalizations from the herd. Tragically, before they could intervene, Rani collapsed and despite the efforts of the Zoo’s Elephant Care and Animal Health teams to revive her, she could not be saved. The exact cause of her sudden demise is still under investigation, with a necropsy revealing some preexisting changes in her heart.
Rani, at the age of 27, was an irreplaceable member of the elephant family at the St. Louis Zoo. She enjoyed playing with her sisters Maliha and Priya and had learned essential parenting skills from her mother, Ellie. Her unique squeaking noise during family interactions was even mimicked by her own daughter, Jade.
This unfortunate incident sheds light on the vulnerability of Asian elephants, an endangered species with fewer than 50,000 remaining in the wild according to the World Wildlife Fund. These magnificent creatures, also known as the largest land mammals in Asia, are in desperate need of conservation efforts to protect their dwindling population.
While the St. Louis Zoo mourns the loss of Rani, they remain committed to the welfare and care of the other elephants under their watch.
