Bears’ Undrafted Rookie Tyson Bagent Impresses as Starting QB in Place of Injured Fields

In a surprising turn of events, undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent took the helm as starting quarterback for the Chicago Bears in their game against the Minnesota Vikings. Bagent, who replaced the injured Justin Fields, showed great promise during the preseason and continued to impress with his performance during the game.

Bagent’s debut didn’t start on a positive note, with a fumble that resulted in a Vikings touchdown. However, he quickly bounced back and led the Bears down the field for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. He even had an opportunity to lead a game-winning drive, but an interception sealed the Bears’ loss.

Despite the outcome, Bagent’s poised and confident demeanor throughout the game caught the attention of his teammates and coaches. His preparation and dedication to learning the game were evident as he constantly studied film and the playbook, always ready to step up when needed.

This week, Bagent will transition from running the scout team offense to taking on the role of the starting quarterback in place of Fields, who is doubtful to play in Week 7 due to a dislocated right thumb. This will make Bagent the fourth Division II quarterback in the past 20 years to start a game.

The Bears’ belief in Bagent was solidified when they promoted him to QB2 on the depth chart, surpassing veteran Nathan Peterman. Although Bagent’s NFL experience is limited to less than one-half of a football game, his potential and performance have the Bears excited for what he can bring to the team.

Bagent’s journey to the NFL wasn’t easy. Despite his impressive high school career that resulted in back-to-back state championships, he didn’t receive much attention from college recruiters. Offers from Division I schools, such as West Virginia University, never materialized, leaving Bagent disappointed. However, he didn’t let that deter him.

Bagent’s parents, both graduates of Shepherd University, took him to watch Rams football games during his youth. Inspired by his parents and motivated by his desire to succeed, Bagent excelled at Shepherd University, setting records for all-time touchdown passes, passing yards, and total touchdowns in Division II. His remarkable performance earned him an invite to the Senior Bowl, where he was coached by Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy.

Although Bagent went undrafted, the Bears saw his potential and signed him in May. Throughout the offseason, he continuously impressed coaches and teammates with his accuracy, decision-making, and poise. Even veteran players took notice of Bagent’s abilities, with tight end Cole Kmet highlighting his precise throwing during a one-on-one route in Indianapolis.

As the Bears face a challenging start to the season with a 1-5 record and uncertainty surrounding Fields’ return, Bagent’s ascendance to the starting role brings newfound hope to the team. His Division II background and the records he set demonstrate his ability to overcome obstacles and thrive in competitive situations.

Teammates and coaches have praised Bagent’s mentality and approach to the game, noting his confidence and maturity beyond his years. It’s evident that Bagent’s hard work and dedication have paid off, leading him to this moment as the starting quarterback for the Chicago Bears.

Although the road ahead won’t be easy, with tough matchups against the Raiders and subsequent opponents, the Bears believe that Bagent has what it takes to lead the team to victory. Only time will tell if the undrafted rookie can rise to the occasion, but for now, the Bears are excited about his potential and the spark he brings to the team.
