BBC News host undergoes major surgery and will be off air for MONTHS

BBC World News’ Karin Giannone has revealed she will be off air for months after undergoing major knee surgery.

The journalist, 50, who regularly appears on the broadcaster’s dedicated news channel after joining in 2005, shared a snap from her hospital bed to X and Instagram on Thursday.

Karin explained how she had undergone knee osteotomy, which helps alleviate arthritis and takes six-months to a year to make a full recovery.

Writing: I’m out of action for a couple of months after a knee osteotomy surgery, but very much looking forward to being back on air on @BBCNews when I am up and running again!’.

Before adding: ‘(*not actually running – that won’t happen for a while)’.

Karen, an avid runner, has in the past been keeping fans up to date with her races and just last week shared how she had run her third half marathon in two weeks as a last hurrah before undergoing the knife.

It comes after Karin alongside four female BBC News presenters, returned to work in January after being sidelined for a year while still receiving full pay.

Karin, Annita McVeigh, Kasia Madera, Geeta Guru-Murthy and Martine Croxall were left in limbo during the merger between the BBC’s News and World News channels last year.

The quintet declined voluntary redundancy and have been left without job titles since March – but have still collected hundreds of thousands of pounds collectively as part of their salaries.

The women, who have more than 100 years experience between them, had threatened legal action against the corporation, claiming they were unfairly selected for redundancy.

But sources told the Times that the Beeb ‘reversed ferret’ and brought back with new job titles in a bid to avoid a potential lawsuit following the merger which saw dozens of job cuts at BBC News and Worlds News.

The group have all been supporting each other since they were left without job titles last March.

On Christmas Eve McVeigh posted a photo of the quintet having drinks at a pub, with the message: ‘Season’s Greetings to all my followers here, thanks for your support, and to these wonderful women ⁦for their friendship.’
