Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy is pleased to announce the upcoming National Celebration of Reading, a biennial event that will take place at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The event aims to bring together renowned authors, entertainers, and special guests to support the foundation’s mission and promote literacy across the nation.

The National Celebration of Reading will feature a lineup of award-winning authors, including Amy Tan, Joe Biden, Steven Spielberg, Cheryl Strayed, and Jennifer Weiner. These bestselling authors will join forces to highlight the power of words and stories in shaping our perspectives and connecting individuals from diverse backgrounds. Literacy plays a crucial role in expanding opportunities and fostering unity and understanding within communities.

The event will be emceed by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jonathan Capehart and will include a captivating musical performance by Broadway star Norm Lewis. The Honorable Mike J. Rogers and Jenna Bush Hager will serve as the chairs for the 2023 event, aiming to raise awareness about the adult literacy crisis and garner support for the foundation’s work.

During the National Celebration of Reading, outstanding leaders at the national and grassroots levels who have made significant contributions to promoting literacy in America will be honored. The American Library Association and social media influencer Bookish Bonnie will receive the 2023 Barbara Bush National Literacy Honors Award for their exceptional efforts. Bernie’s Book Bank and Trident Literacy Association will be recognized with the 2023 Dyer Pearl Literacy Award for their outstanding local contributions.
