Bangladesh Set to Face Afghanistan in ODI Series as World Cup Preparations Continue

The Bangladesh cricket team is gearing up for an exciting three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, following their recent record-breaking victory in the lone Test match. Arriving in Chattogram ahead of the series, the Tigers are looking to replicate their fine form in the white-ball contests.

On the other hand, Hashmatullah Shahidi and his troops have also reached Bangladesh and are expected to give a tough fight with their full-strength side, including star cricketers Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, and Mohammad Nabi, who have returned to the squad.

While some Bangladesh players began training yesterday, Afghanistan is set to resume training today before the first ODI on July 5. The Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury stadium in Chattogram will host all three ODIs, scheduled for July 5, 8, and 11.

The upcoming ODI series holds great significance for Bangladesh as they prepare for the ICC ODI World Cup, where they will face Afghanistan in their opening match. This series serves as an excellent platform for the Tigers to fine-tune their game plan ahead of the mega event.

Selector Habibul Bashar emphasized the importance of gaining momentum before heading to the World Cup. He acknowledged the structure of the tournament, where every team will face each other, and highlighted the need for the Tigers to be in good form as a team.

Considering that the conditions in India, where the World Cup will take place, are similar to Bangladesh, Bashar believes that the team does not need to make major adjustments as a unit.

Despite this, all eyes will be on Naim Sheikh and Afif Hossain, who have returned to the ODI squad for the Afghanistan series. Their performances will be crucial in their bid to secure a spot in the final World Cup squad.

Bashar mentioned that there isn’t much scope for drastic changes in the squad, and the upcoming series against Afghanistan or the Asia Cup will not play a significant role in the team selection.

The return of star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who has recovered from a finger injury, will undoubtedly strengthen the team. However, the persistent injury concerns surrounding skipper Tamim Iqbal remain a crucial factor for Bangladesh. The team management will be hoping for Iqbal to lead from the front on and off the field.

As Bangladesh continues their preparations for the World Cup, they will look to utilize the ODI series against Afghanistan and the upcoming Asia Cup as vital opportunities to gain momentum and fine-tune their strategies. With a strong squad and the return of key players, the Tigers are primed for an exciting contest against Afghanistan and will aim to build a winning streak leading up to the World Cup.
