Awami League’s Victory in B’desh Parliamentary Poll is People’s Victory: Sheikh Hasina

DHAKA – Awami League (AL) President and newly-elected Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has described her party’s win in the country’s parliamentary election as the people’s victory and hailed Bangladesh for setting an example of holding free, fair, and neutral polls.

In the 12th general elections, Hasina’s party secured a landslide victory with over two-thirds majority, giving the AL-led 14-party alliance another chance to form the government in Bangladesh for the fourth consecutive term.

Hasina expressed her satisfaction with the election process, emphasizing the free and fair nature of the polls. She stated, We’ve set an example that elections can be free, fair, and neutral. You (observers and journalists) have come and witnessed how the people cast their votes in our country.

The Prime Minister emphasized that her victory is a testament to the power of the people and their ability to choose their government in a fair manner, an accomplishment her party had been fighting for throughout their struggle. She acknowledged that many independent candidates and contenders from other parties were also elected in this election, further highlighting its credibility.

Hasina attributed the lack of participation by the main opposition party, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), to their fear of a direct election. She criticized the BNP, stating, The party that was founded in the hands of military dictators can’t act on their own. They don’t have public support. So, they are scared of a direct election.

The massive victory paves the way for Hasina to lead the government as Prime Minister for the fifth time, securing a fourth consecutive term. The Election Commission (EC) has unofficially announced the results of 298 parliamentary seats out of the 300, declaring the election as free and fair.

The AL triumphed in almost every district, winning the majority of seats and establishing their stronghold in key areas. In Dhaka district alone, the AL secured 16 out of 20 seats, with the remaining four won by independent candidates. Gopalganj, the birthplace of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, witnessed a clean sweep by the AL, with Hasina winning one of the three seats.

The AL’s success was also evident in other districts, including Faridpur, Gazipur, Tangail, Khulna, Bagerhat, and many small districts. However, the AL candidates faced some tough competition in Sylhet, Sunamganj, and Naogaon-2 constituencies where independent candidates emerged victorious.

The election outcome showcases the AL’s popularity and solidifies their position as the dominant party in Bangladesh. The results demonstrate the people’s support for Hasina and her party, a clear endorsement of their governance and policies.

With her victory, Hasina now faces the immense responsibility of leading the country once again. The people of Bangladesh have placed their trust in her and the Awami League, expecting continued progress, development, and prosperity under her leadership.

Bangladesh has indeed set an example with these elections, demonstrating that a democracy can conduct transparent and impartial polls, giving its citizens the power to choose their representatives freely. The success of these elections serves as an inspiration for other nations, highlighting the importance of ensuring a fair electoral process that reflects the will of the people.

As Bangladesh embarks on a new phase of governance, the focus remains on delivering promises, addressing challenges, and working towards national welfare. Sheikh Hasina’s victory symbolizes the hopes and aspirations of the people, who have entrusted her with the responsibility of steering the nation towards a brighter future.

Note: The Election Commission will announce the remaining two constituency results at a later date.
