Bangkok MP Steps in to Protect Woman from Harassment in Physical Altercation
A member of the Move Forward Party (MFP) in Bangkok has taken responsibility for a physical altercation that occurred at a restaurant on Friday night. However, the MP, Chorayuth Tonkla Chaturapornprasit, asserts that he intervened to defend a woman who was being harassed.
Video footage of the incident, widely circulated on social media, captures Chorayuth engaging in a confrontation with another man at a restaurant in the Ekamai area. In the video, Chorayuth can be seen intervening as the man harasses a woman, invading her personal space and even placing his hand around her neck.
Chorayuth is observed brushing the man’s arm away from the woman, engaging in a dialogue with him, and then being struck before the situation escalates.
Karoonpon Tieansuwan, a spokesman for the Move Forward Party, explained on Saturday that the other man had previously harassed Chorayuth’s friends and even slapped someone before turning his attention to the MP. According to Karoonpon, the man slipped and fell during the subsequent altercation, insisting that he had already targeted Chorayuth’s group before their bodyguards and restaurant staff intervened.
Both parties involved have agreed not to pursue further action.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Chorayuth expressed his readiness to accept any blame and apologized to the public. However, he insisted that he was merely protecting the woman seen in the video and did not instigate the fight.
While regretting his use of violence and referring to the incident as an important life lesson, Chorayuth criticized certain news outlets for publishing misleading accounts of the altercation without first contacting him. He thanked those outlets that had accurately reported his statement and urged those that had not yet done so to reach out to him for clarification.
