Two children have tragically lost their lives in British Columbia as a result of flu-related illnesses, prompting health officials to issue a warning about the increasing respiratory risk. The B.C. Centre for Disease Control (CDC) disclosed that influenza activity in children has reached its highest levels since the beginning of this respiratory season. Within the past two weeks alone, the center received reports of two influenza-associated deaths among children. Preliminary findings suggest that these fatalities were due to secondary bacterial infections, which can occur as a complication of the flu.
To combat the spread of serious illness, health officials are urging residents to get vaccinated against the flu. The B.C. CDC highlights the importance of vaccination for children at the greatest risk of severe outcomes, including those with chronic medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, cancer, or weakened immune systems. Additionally, children and teenagers who face difficulty breathing, swallowing, or have a higher risk of choking on food or fluids due to underlying conditions should also be prioritized for vaccination. This includes individuals with severe brain damage, spinal cord injuries, seizures, neuromuscular disorders, obesity, or who need to take Aspirin for extended periods of time.
In line with preventive measures, the B.C. CDC is reiterating their call for sick individuals to stay home and wear masks in indoor public spaces. Most children infected with influenza and other respiratory viruses can recover safely at home without medical intervention. However, parents of children at high risk for severe complications should consult with their healthcare providers about early access to an influenza antiviral drug known as oseltamivir (Tamiflu). The drug is most effective when administered within 12 hours of illness onset, and ideally no later than 48 hours.
For parents and caregivers, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention if a child under three months of age shows symptoms of concern, such as difficulty breathing or fever. In such cases, calling 911 for an ambulance or visiting the nearest emergency department or urgent care center is recommended.
The recent warning from the B.C. CDC comes on the heels of their report on high levels of invasive streptococcal infections among children. To date, there have been 51 cases recorded in individuals under 20 years old, more than double the number reported last year. While most streptococcal infections can be treated with antibiotics, they can become more dangerous when the bacteria invade the lungs, blood, or surrounding tissues, potentially leading to pneumonia, sepsis, toxic shock syndrome, or necrotizing fasciitis.
Health officials emphasize the critical need for public awareness and adherence to preventive measures to curb the spread of flu-related illnesses and invasive streptococcal infections. Vaccination, staying home when sick, wearing masks, and seeking medical attention when necessary are crucial steps in protecting the health and well-being of individuals, particularly children who are most vulnerable to respiratory risks.
