A B.C. man has made Canadian history with an astonishing 21 impaired driving convictions, according to police. The incident occurred in Abbotsford in August 2022 and involved a motorcycle driver with a long history of prohibited and impaired driving offences. When authorities arrived at the scene, the man had already fled, leaving his seriously injured passenger in the care of first responders. The driver, identified as 66-year-old Roy Heide, was arrested later, found to have a blood alcohol level twice the legal limit. Heide recently pleaded guilty to impaired driving, driving while disqualified, and driving while prohibited.

Const. Art Stele, who was involved in the case, expressed deep concern over the high number of convictions. He stated, What’s incredibly concerning is that this conviction represented Mr. Heide’s twenty-first conviction for impaired driving, which is believed to be the single most conviction for impaired driving offences someone has received in Canadian history.

As a consequence of his latest offence, Heide has been sentenced to four years and 354 days in jail. The severity of his sentence reflects both the dangerous nature of his repeated actions and their potential to cause severe harm to innocent people.

Sgt. Paul Walker, part of the Abbotsford Police Department’s traffic enforcement unit, emphasized the devastating impact of impaired driving and urged the public to remain vigilant. Our front line officers continue to be out enforcing impaired driving laws and taking a zero-tolerance approach to driving while impaired, Walker stated. The department has already removed nearly 800 impaired drivers from the roads this year. Walker further added, We continue encouraging our community to report possible impaired drivers to the police.

Impaired driving has long been a major concern for law enforcement agencies across Canada. The efforts to combat this problem remain a priority, with an increased focus on road safety and stricter enforcement of impaired driving laws.

The news of Roy Heide’s record-breaking convictions serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of driving under the influence. The authorities hope that this case will bring further attention to the issue and strengthen efforts to prevent impaired driving.

While this incident has made Canadian history in terms of convictions, it also highlights the need for continued awareness and action to ensure the safety of all road users. As the battle against impaired driving continues, it is imperative that everyone plays a role in reporting suspected impaired drivers and promoting responsible behavior behind the wheel.

This case serves as a grim reminder that impaired driving can have devastating and long-lasting effects on individuals and communities. The pursuit of road safety and the prevention of impaired driving remain ongoing objectives for law enforcement agencies nationwide.
