Popular Bollywood actor Ayushmann Khurrana has been appointed as UNICEF’s National Ambassador and has pledged to raise awareness to eradicate child labour in India. On World Day Against Child Labour, Ayushmann spoke about the millions of children globally who are involved in dangerous and harmful work, depriving them of their childhood, potential, dignity, and hindering their physical and mental development.
Ayushmann emphasized that child labour is detrimental to children’s education, limiting their life opportunities, exposing them to exploitation, violence, and abuse. He said, All children have the right to a safe and labour-free childhood.” Ayushmann suggested that children belong in schools and playgrounds, not workshops, kitchens, and factories. He added, It is our responsibility as adults to help children stay in school and continue learning.
The 38-year-old Bollywood actor encouraged society to come together to help eliminate child labour by discouraging businesses and families from employing children, and by discouraging any form of child labour. He suggested that any instances of child labour be reported to the Child Helpline at 1098 or PENCIL (Platform for Effective Enforcement for No Child Labour) portal.
Ayushmann’s appointment as UNICEF’s National Ambassador is momentous for India, where the percentage of children involved in child labour has increased during the pandemic. He urged society to take action to give children the safe and labour-free childhood they deserve. Ayushmann will next be seen in ‘Dream Girl 2.’
