Average Weekly Global Cyberattacks Reach Highest Level in 2 Years, Reports Check Point Research

According to a recent report from Check Point Research, the average weekly number of global cyberattacks has reached its peak in the past two years, experiencing an 8% year-over-year growth. While the disruptive impact of the Russo-Ukrainian conflict on the cyber landscape has diminished in recent months, the threat landscape has returned to a state of normality. This new normal is characterized by an increase in cyberattacks, new evasive tactics, frequent hacktivism-based attacks, and a daily barrage of ransomware targeting numerous organizations.

The report highlights the importance of maintaining heightened vigilance and robust cybersecurity measures to counteract the relentless and evolving nature of cyberattacks. In recent months, various noteworthy cyber threats have emerged. These include a Chinese-based Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) that targeted governmental entities, hidden malware discovered behind legitimate-looking apps, a new version of Chinese espionage propagated through USB devices, and the discovery of malicious firmware implants on internet routers. Additionally, cybercriminals continue to exploit the latest advancements in artificial intelligence by utilizing generative AI chat platforms like ChatGPT4.

One significant finding of the report is that the average number of attacks per organization per week has reached its highest level in the past two years, with a staggering 1258 attacks. This represents an alarming trend that organizations need to address to safeguard their sensitive data and operations. The report also reveals the industries that have been most vulnerable to cyberattacks. The Education/Research sector experienced the highest number of attacks, with an average of 2179 attacks per organization per week. However, this marks a 6% decrease compared to the previous year. The Government/Military sector followed closely behind with an average of 1772 attacks per week, indicating a 9% increase.

Notably, the Healthcare sector witnessed a significant rise in average weekly attacks, with an alarming 30% year-over-year increase. This surge in attacks against the healthcare industry is a cause for concern, as it puts sensitive patient data and critical medical infrastructure at risk. Organizations in the education, government, military, and healthcare sectors must prioritize robust security measures to withstand the incessant onslaught of cyber threats.

The report also sheds light on the geographical distribution of cyberattacks. Africa experienced the highest average number of weekly cyberattacks per organization, with an average of 2164 attacks. This represents a staggering 23% year-on-year increase. The APAC region witnessed a substantial 22% YoY increase, with an average of 2046 attacks per organization per week.

In terms of ransomware attacks, the report reveals that one out of every 44 organizations worldwide experienced a ransomware attack in Q2 2023. While this represents a 9% decrease compared to the previous year, it still highlights the persistent threat that ransomware poses to organizations worldwide. APAC and Europe experienced significant year-over-year increases in ransomware attacks per organization, with a 29% and 21% increase, respectively. The North American region followed closely behind with a 15% YoY increase.

Further analysis presented in the report reveals that the Government/Military sector was the most targeted industry when it came to ransomware attacks, with one out of every 25 organizations affected. The Healthcare sector ranked second, with one out of every 27 organizations experiencing ransomware attacks. The Education/Research industry closely followed, with one out of every 31 organizations affected.

To counter the growing threat landscape, organizations are advised to implement several cybersecurity measures. These include keeping computers and servers up-to-date with the latest security patches and conducting frequent cybersecurity awareness training for employees. Strengthening user authentication, implementing strong password policies, enabling multi-factor authentication, and educating employees about phishing attacks are crucial steps in enhancing an organization’s cybersecurity strategy.

Furthermore, organizations are encouraged to prioritize prevention over detection. Contrary to popular belief, most cyber attacks, including advanced ones, can be prevented with the right technologies and measures in place. Anti-ransomware solutions should also be considered to protect against targeted spear-phishing attacks.

In conclusion, the average weekly global cyberattacks have reached their highest level in the past two years. The report presents a concerning picture of the evolving threat landscape, demanding increased vigilance and robust cybersecurity measures. Organizations across various industries must prioritize cybersecurity to safeguard their sensitive data and operations. By implementing preventive measures, keeping systems updated, and educating employees, organizations can better defend against the relentless and evolving nature of cyber threats.
