Atal Bihari Vajpayee, India’s former prime minister, was the right man in the right party, according to the author of a new biography titled Vajpayee: The Ascent of the Hindu Right 1924-1977. At the book launch, author Abhishek Choudhary praised Vajpayee for always coming forward to defend the Sangh parivar when they faced trouble. BJP leader Swapan Dasgupta also agreed with Choudhary’s assessment, adding that Vajpayee was conservative and traditionalist, rather than a liberal. Meanwhile, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said Vajpayee’s appeal stemmed from the way he conducted his six-year-long prime ministership. He added that Vajpayee had to temper some of his beliefs to maintain the coalition his government was in.
