This week, the Australian Minister of Foreign Affairs will embark on a diplomatic journey to Jordan, Israel, the Occupied Palestinian Territories, and the United Arab Emirates. The purpose of this visit is to contribute to international efforts aimed at achieving a long-lasting peace in the Middle East.

Following the October 7 terror attacks, which occurred one hundred days ago, the Minister will utilize Australia’s influence and voice to advocate for several important issues. These issues include finding a way out of the current conflict, increasing essential humanitarian assistance, upholding international law, ensuring the safety of civilians, preventing regional escalation, and ultimately working towards a lasting peace.

Recognizing Jordan’s significant role as a bridge-builder and stabilizing force in the region, the Minister’s visit to Amman is an opportunity to strengthen coordination efforts. The focus will be on alleviating the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and discussing international initiatives that could kickstart a political process leading to the establishment of a future Palestinian state.

During engagements with Israeli officials, the Minister will express Australia’s support for Israel’s security and its right to defend itself against acts of terrorism. However, it will also be emphasized that the methods employed in self-defense bear significance. Additionally, Australia will reiterate its call for the immediate and unconditional release of hostages while meeting with their families and survivors of the October 7 attacks.

To address the urgent need for increased and effective humanitarian assistance, the Australian Humanitarian Coordinator will accompany the Minister. The discussions in the region will focus on identifying practical ways to improve the flow of aid.

Furthermore, Australia’s commitment to the Palestinians’ right to self-determination and the provision of humanitarian aid in Gaza and the West Bank will be underscored during meetings with representatives in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. The Minister will also meet with communities affected by settler violence and reiterate Australia’s stance that settlements are illegal according to international law. Concerns over the forced displacement of Palestinians and the use of Gaza as a platform for terrorism will also be emphasized.

The visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) aims to reaffirm the strong friendship between the countries and welcome the start of negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. The UAE’s crucial role in regional security will be discussed during meetings with counterparts. Priorities will include preventing the conflict from spreading and establishing the necessary conditions for enduring peace and stability in the Middle East.

Furthermore, the Minister will visit Australian defense personnel stationed in the UAE. These personnel have played a pivotal role in repatriating Australians affected by the ongoing conflict and in recent efforts related to unrest in Sudan.

Australia is firmly committed to collaborating with partners to achieve a just and lasting peace in the form of a two-state solution. This solution envisions Israelis and Palestinians living securely within borders that are internationally recognized.

The Minister’s visit comes at a critical juncture, offering an opportunity to address pressing issues and work towards lasting peace in the Middle East. By focusing on humanitarian assistance, upholding international law, and advocating for the rights of all parties involved, Australia seeks to contribute significantly to the region’s stability and prosperity.
