Ron Barassi, an Australian football legend, has passed away, leaving behind a seismic moment in sporting history. Barassi had been ailing for some time, so his death does not come as a surprise. However, the impact he made on Australian sports is immeasurable. Tributes poured in from various prominent figures, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and AFL Chairman Richard Goyder.

To honor Barassi’s legacy, the AFL paid tribute with a video before the Carlton-Melbourne clash, which was followed by a standing ovation from players and fans at Adelaide Oval. There was also a moment of silence before the Port Adelaide-GWS semi.

Barassi’s achievements in the world of football are remarkable. As the first player to be inducted as a Legend into the Australian Football Hall of Fame, he played 253 senior VFL games, with 204 for Melbourne and 49 for Carlton. Combined with his coaching career, Barassi claimed 10 premierships at Melbourne, Carlton, and North Melbourne. Only Norm Smith, another legendary figure, has matched his record.

Barassi’s impact on the game was not limited to his playing and coaching prowess. He revolutionized the sport as a player, creating the position of ruck rover. He also acted as an evangelist for Australian rules football, taking the game north and contributing to its growth into a national phenomenon. Even before the league achieved true national status, Barassi was already a well-known figure across Australia.

Throughout his career, Barassi made an indelible mark on four clubs. He played and coached Melbourne during their golden era, securing multiple grand finals. His decision to leave Melbourne for Carlton in 1965 was groundbreaking, as it was rare for players to change clubs at the time. This move marked the beginning of the VFL’s transition from its amateur origins. Barassi’s leadership and discipline as the captain-coach led Carlton to victory in 1968 and 1970.

After a brief break from the game, Barassi joined North Melbourne, guiding them to their first premiership in 1975 and another one in 1977. He later returned to Melbourne as coach but was unable to replicate his past success. In 1993, he was lured out of retirement to coach Sydney, where he contributed to the groundwork for their grand final appearance in 1996 under Rodney Eade.

Barassi’s influence extended beyond his accomplishments on the field. He was known for his bravery and selflessness, as exemplified by his Australian Bravery Award recognition for intervening in an attack on a woman. Additionally, he played a symbolic role in the Commonwealth Games, walking on water to carry the Queen’s Baton.

This iconic figure’s passing marks the end of an era in Australian sports. Ron Barassi’s legacy will forever be engrained in the history of football, with his name synonymous with greatness. His impact as a player, coach, and ambassador for the game will continue to inspire generations to come.
