Aussie Eurovision fans wish Cyprus’ entrant represented Australia

She’s the Australian-born teen pop singer who placed 12th representing Cyprus in this year’s Eurovision finals. This year, Australia was represented by Electric Fields, but the band was brutally eliminated in the first semi-final taking place in Malmö, Sweden.

During the grand finale on Saturday, Fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to praise Kapsis, who made it to the last leg of the competition.

‘Wish this was Australia’s entry, but love that we get to vote for it!’ wrote one fan.

‘Can Cyprus choose Australia’s act next year, please?’ another asked.

‘Yet another Cyprus entry who was born in Australia, the Cypriot-Australian Eurovision Entry Breeding Program moving along apace,’ joked another person on X.

Others brought some ‘controversial’ thoughts to the discussion.

‘Controversial truth… Cyprus sends better Australian acts than Australia does (some years! – I’m not looking at you Queen Dami [Im] and Queen Kate [Miller-Heidke]!)’ one X user suggested.

Silia is the second Aussie in two years to represent Cyprus.

Andrew Lambrou from Sydney made the finals last in 2023 and finished 12th.

It comes as Switzerland won the grand final of Eurovision 2024.

Singer Nemo, who is the competition’s first non-binary winner, scored 365 points with the juries and 226 from the public for a total of 591 with their song The Code.

Nemo used their childhood opera experience to create an impressive performance mixing rap, rock, drum ‘n bass and classical opera, as well as balancing on a revolving disc spinning at speed as they belted a tune.

After being announced as the winner, a tearful Nemo said: ‘I want to say thank you so much.

The 24-year-old, who is the competition’s first non-binary winner, scored 365 points with the juries and 226 from the public for a total of 591 with their song The Code

‘I hope this contest can live up to its promise and continue to stand for peace and dignity for every person in this world.’

Croatia finished in second place with Rim Tim Tagi Dim by Baby Lasagna after they were scored 547 points.

And Ukraine finished in third place thanks to alyona alyona & Jerry Heil with their song Teresa & Maria which was awarded 453 points.

Ahead of the final, Nemo was set as the favorite with 5-2 odds to win after a successful performance on Swiss TV.

Nemo said the song is about them realizing their own non-binary identity and they hope they can stand up for ‘the entire LGBTQIA+ community’ by entering the contest.

The artist, whose full name is Nemo Mettler, added that when accepting they didn’t ‘feel like a man or a woman’, saying: ‘I had to break a few codes.’
