Australia and the United States have unveiled a new joint plan that will see Australia manufacturing missiles for U.S. military forces. This move comes as part of the close allies’ commitment to deepening their defense cooperation. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the plan will be officially announced during the annual Australia-U.S. Ministerial (AUSMIN) dialogue. It is expected that Australia will establish a local missile manufacturing industry within the next two years.
The Australian Defence Department has not yet responded to the reports. However, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin are currently in Queensland for the AUSMIN talks with their Australian counterparts. This year’s dialogue focuses on various topics, including regional security, clean energy, and progress on a deal for the U.S. to sell nuclear-powered submarines to Australia.
Hosting the high-level meeting for the first time since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Australia aims to strengthen its alliance with the United States and address shared security concerns in the Indo-Pacific region. Following the conclusion of the two-day talks, Defence Minister Richard Marles and Secretary Austin will travel to north Queensland, where both Australian and U.S. military personnel are participating in the ‘Talisman Sabre’ war games alongside 11 other nations.
Unfortunately, the talks were overshadowed by a tragic incident when an Australian Defence Force (ADF) helicopter crashed into the ocean off the coast of Queensland on Friday. It is feared that at least four people onboard have lost their lives. Foreign Minister Penny Wong expressed her condolences, describing the crash as a stark reminder of the risks faced by servicemen and women.
In conclusion, Australia’s decision to manufacture missiles for the U.S. military reflects the deepening defense ties between the two nations. This development underscores their commitment to collaborative security efforts and further strengthening their alliance. The AUSMIN talks continue to address crucial issues while acknowledging the sacrifices made by military personnel for the safety and security of both countries.
