Australia Stands Firm on U.S. Nuclear Submarine Deal Amid Concerns
Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed confidence that the deal for the United States to sell nuclear-powered submarines to Australia remains on track, despite concerns raised by a group of U.S. Republican lawmakers. The lawmakers sent a letter to President Joe Biden, stating that the plan to sell three attack submarines to Australia under the AUKUS partnership would weaken the U.S. fleet without a clear replacement strategy. The concerns stem from China’s growing military capabilities.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin are currently in Queensland for the annual AUSMIN dialogue, where the focus will be on progress regarding the nuclear-powered submarine deal, regional security, and clean energy. Albanese reiterated his confidence in the deal, mentioning his recent conversation with U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who has reaffirmed their commitment to the agreement.
The AUKUS project, a trilateral security partnership announced by Australia, the United States, and Britain in March, will see the U.S. sell three Virginia-class nuclear-powered submarines to Australia in the early 2030s. Subsequently, Australia and Britain will collaborate to produce a new submarine class, called SSN-AUKUS, in the following decade.
Australia has pledged to invest $3 billion in the U.S. submarine industrial base as part of the AUKUS agreement. This investment aims to alleviate pressure on the American industrial base while contributing to the net capability of all three countries involved. Australia’s Defense Minister Richard Marles emphasized the advantages of this arrangement, stating that it will develop an industrial base in Australia that benefits the country, the UK, and the U.S.
The security allies will also discuss China’s security ambitions in the Indo-Pacific region during the AUSMIN dialogue. U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin highlighted the need to support allies and partners in defending themselves against Chinese coercion. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong described the United States as indispensable to the balance in the region, emphasizing their significance in maintaining regional stability.
The discussions between the United States and Australia come as tensions with China continue to rise. China’s increasing military assertiveness in the East China Sea, South China Sea, and the Southwest Pacific has raised concerns among regional countries and their allies. As Australia deepens its collaboration with the United States and strengthens its defense capabilities, it aims to counterbalance China’s bullying behavior in the region.
The AUKUS agreement holds strategic significance for all three countries involved.
