Mr Paul Lehmann has been appointed as Australia’s next Ambassador to Ukraine and will also be accredited to the Republic of Moldova, the Australian Government announced today.
In his new role, Mr Lehmann will lead Australia’s Embassy to Ukraine and play a crucial part in supporting Ukraine’s efforts to defend itself against Russia’s aggression.
Over the past few years, Australia has strengthened its relationship with Ukraine, and as Ambassador, Mr Lehmann will contribute to empowering Ukraine to end the war according to its own terms.
Additionally, Mr Lehmann will focus on expanding engagement between Australia and Ukraine, as well as other partners, across various areas of shared interest. These include humanitarian assistance, trade and investment, energy and food security, multilateral cooperation, and people-to-people links.
Furthermore, Mr Lehmann will work towards advancing Australia’s interests in Moldova, while also ensuring the provision of consular support to Australians in the region.
With a distinguished career in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr Lehmann brings extensive experience to his new role. Prior to his appointment, he served as Minister-Counsellor (Governance) at the Australian High Commission in Port Moresby. He has also held overseas positions such as High Commissioner to Nigeria and Minister-Counsellor (Development) at the Australian Embassy in Afghanistan.
Outgoing Ambassador Bruce Edwards was acknowledged for his contributions in advancing Australia’s interests in Ukraine and Moldova during a challenging period since 2020.
The appointment of Mr Paul Lehmann reflects Australia’s commitment to deepening its engagement in the region and providing support to Ukraine during this crucial time.
The new Ambassador’s experience and expertise in international relations, coupled with his previous assignments in diverse regions, make him well-suited to strengthen ties between Australia, Ukraine, and Moldova.
Australia continues to stand by Ukraine in its pursuit of peace and stability, working alongside international partners to support its sovereignty and security.
As Mr Lehmann assumes his new role, the focus will be on fostering collaboration, promoting mutual interests, and building a prosperous future for Australia, Ukraine, and Moldova.
