The Delhi Education Minister, Atishi, has paid a visit to University College London (UCL) in the UK to explore potential partnerships with the institution. The focus of the partnership would be on capacity-building training for teachers and school administrators from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) primary schools. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party, under Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, is committed to transforming the MCD school system into world-class institutions. Atishi stated that to make MCD schools world-class education institutions, it is important to let MCD teachers explore international education trends, and UCL could help facilitate this exploration.
Delhi Government schools have a history of prioritizing international exposure for their teachers, with over 1100 teachers and principals sent to educational institutions worldwide, including the United Kingdom, Finland, Singapore, and other nations. Additionally, premier institutions such as IIM Ahmedabad and Lucknow have provided training to the principals and teachers of Delhi government schools.
The partnership with UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society, known as the Institute of Education (IOE), could be instrumental in bringing pedagogical best practices from across the world to the MCD classrooms. Atishi believes that providing this exposure to MCD school teachers would significantly contribute to strengthening the Delhi education model and contribute to the holistic development of students in their formative years.
Atishi was accompanied on her visit to UCL by the Delhi Education Secretary, the Director of Education of MCD, and a senior faculty member from the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Delhi. The UCL’s Institute of Education is the world’s leading centre for education and social science research, teaching, and engagement.
The education landscape in Delhi is changing, with a focus on quality education in government schools. The visit to UCL is part of this focus, and Delhi Education Minister Atishi believes that partnerships with institutions like UCL can help transform MCD schools into centers of excellence, contributing to the overall progress of Delhi’s education system.
