Astronics, a leading provider of advanced technologies for aerospace and defense industries, has been contracted by Textron’s Bell subsidiary to optimize the power system for the U.S. Army’s Future Long Range Assault Aircraft program. Under the agreement, Astronics will refine the electrical power and distribution system for the V-280 Valor weapon system, which it had previously provided for the demonstrator aircraft.
We have enjoyed a close working relationship with Bell for many years, providing innovative solutions for their aircraft, said Peter Gundermann, Chairman, President, and CEO of Astronics. The company’s CorePower technology is already integrated into Bell’s 505 and 525 aircraft, as well as the V-280 Valor.
The objective of the partnership is to finalize the power system design and development, deliver preliminary flight hardware, and provide system integration services. Astronics’ CorePower system incorporates solid-state electronic circuit breaker and power conversation technology to offer clean, intelligent, and efficient power. These features align with the Army’s Modular Open Systems Initiatives, which aim to enhance aircraft performance and reduce system weight.
The U.S. Army’s Future Long Range Assault Aircraft program aims to perfect the V-280 Valor, which will succeed the Army’s UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter. Bell was awarded an initial $1.3 billion contract in December 2022 to undertake the weapons system design and manufacturing, flight testing, airworthiness qualification, and systems integration assistance aspects of the program.
Doug Bush, the Assistant Secretary of the Army for acquisition, logistics, and technology, expressed confidence in the FLRAA program’s execution strategy, stating that it would deliver the transformational capabilities we need to support the Joint force, strengthen deterrence, and win in multi-domain operations.
Astronics’ involvement in optimizing the power system for the V-280 Valor demonstrates their expertise in providing innovative solutions for the aerospace industry. The company’s partnership with Bell reinforces its commitment to delivering high-quality and efficient power technologies to support the U.S. Army’s modernization efforts.
With Astronics refining the V-280 Valor’s power system and working closely with Bell, the U.S. Army can expect enhanced performance and increased efficiency for its future long-range assault aircraft. This collaboration represents a significant milestone in advancing the capabilities of the Army’s aircraft fleet, ultimately contributing to the success of their missions.
