Asthma May Reduce Severity of COVID-19 Infections, Yale Study Finds
In a groundbreaking study conducted by Yale University, researchers have discovered that individuals with asthma may experience less severe COVID-19 infections. This finding challenges the common belief that asthma puts individuals at a higher risk of contracting the virus.
Dr. Geoffrey Chupp, a professor of medicine at Yale School of Medicine, explained that their findings suggest there may be a unique mechanism within asthma patients that allows them to better handle the virus compared to those without the condition. This revelation is significant, as the COVID-19 outbreak had initially raised concerns about the vulnerability of individuals with respiratory diseases.
Contrary to previous information, the Yale research indicates that people with asthma actually experience milder infections and have a lower mortality rate compared to those without the lung disease. The study further revealed that individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are at a higher risk of severe COVID-19 infection, while asthma seems to provide some level of protection. During the peak of the pandemic, Dr. Chupp noticed that his COVID-19 patients with asthma seemed to have higher rates of recovery following infection. This observation led him to investigate the correlation between asthma and COVID-19 recovery.
The study analyzed data from 8,000 patients who were hospitalized between March 2020 and April 2021. The patients were categorized based on their respiratory conditions: asthma, COPD, asthma plus COPD, or no airway disease. Sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) scores were used to track the severity of their infections throughout their hospital stay. Factors such as age, sex, race, and ethnicity were also taken into consideration.
The researchers found that COVID-19 severity was higher in patients with COPD compared to the control group, while individuals with asthma experienced less severe infections. Patients with both asthma and COPD had outcomes similar to those without a chronic airway disease.
In addition, the study examined the count of eosinophils, which are disease-fighting white blood cells associated with chronic lung disease. The researchers discovered that higher eosinophil counts and inflammation were significantly correlated with better health outcomes. Even after adjusting for eosinophil count, the improved outcomes in patients with asthma persisted.
Dr. Chupp, who serves as the director of the Yale Center for Asthma and Airways Disease, urges individuals with asthma to get vaccinated against COVID-19. He emphasizes that COVID-19 will continue to cause illness, and it is essential to take preventive measures.
