Assault on Traffic Police: Ghaziabad Councillor among Eight Booked in Viral Video Clash
On the intervening night of July 16/17, an alleged assault on traffic police personnel at Chaudhary Morh in Ghaziabad has resulted in the booking of eight to ten men, including a sitting councillor of the Ghaziabad municipal corporation. The incident, which gained significant attention after several videos went viral on social media, led to the registration of an FIR 12 days later.
According to the Ghaziabad police, the clash involved individuals who were in an inebriated state, including a couple of traffic personnel. However, the two parties involved had initially settled the issue amicably. It was only after the circulation of multiple videos depicting the incident that the police decided to take action.
The FIR, registered at Kotwali police station, includes charges under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, such as rioting, assault, insult intended to provoke breach of peace, and criminal intimidation. The names of the municipal councillor, his brother, and four other individuals have been mentioned in the FIR, along with unidentified persons.
It should be noted that the police have also suspended a traffic sub-inspector and a traffic constable for misconduct. Investigation into the incident is currently underway.
As depicted in the videos, the incident began with a car overtaking another vehicle at the Chaudhary Morh intersection. Two men emerged from the car and engaged in a scuffle with the traffic police personnel, who were later identified as being in an inebriated state. The situation escalated further when the councillor’s brother was taken to the Model Town police post and reportedly beaten severely, with his phone snatched from him.
While a compromise had initially been reached between the two parties involved, resulting in no immediate action from the police, the subsequent FIR has now rekindled tension. The councillor plans to lodge a complaint with senior police officials, claiming that his brother was unjustly beaten and that the two traffic personnel involved fled.
The videos also portray a man in traffic police uniform inside a car, subjected to abuse and questioning by several individuals associated with the councillor. These videos shed light on different perspectives surrounding the incident.
