Assam Witnesses Zero Loss of Lives to Extremist Violence in 2023: CM
Guwahati, Dec 26 – Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced today that the year 2023 saw no loss of lives due to extremist violence in the state. Sarma attributed this success to the concerted efforts of both the Union and State Governments, stating that their policies and peace initiatives had finally yielded fruitful results.
2023 was an unprecedented year as our policing and peace efforts bore fruit, declared Sarma. Due to the sustained efforts of the Union and State Governments, Assam is witnessing an era of peace and prosperity. In 2023, several groups laid down their arms, AFSPA was further revoked, and no lives were lost to extremist violence, marking a successful year for the state.
The gradual removal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) from Assam is currently underway, with enforcement now limited to only four districts. The Chief Minister highlighted that since 2021, a total of 8,756 ex-cadres have been successfully rehabilitated, with an expenditure of over Rs 300 crore. Skill training and ability enhancement programs have been organized for these surrendered cadres, enabling them to actively contribute to the state’s economic growth.
Unsurprisingly, this significant accomplishment has been widely applauded by the people of Assam. The announcement brings hope and relief to a region that has endured the brunt of extremist violence for many years.
