The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) staged a protest in Guwahati on Tuesday against the Assam government’s decision to introduce English as a medium of study for science and mathematics from class 6. The students’ organisation declared a month-long agitation across the state against the move. Chief Advisor of AASU, Samujjal Bhattacharya, stated that the Assam government has taken an anti-vernacular decision and that AASU has announced a month-long agitation programme. Bhattacharya said that AASU had discussed the decision with various organisations and sent their decisions to the government, but no solution was found. The government did not respond positively and started the distribution of textbooks, which the AASU leaders saw as a provocation. The students’ union announced that the agitation would continue until and unless the government decision is not withdrawn.
