Assam Introduces Mobile Forensic Vans to Boost Conviction Rates
In a bid to enhance the conviction rates of criminals in Assam, the state government has taken a significant step by introducing mobile forensic vans. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the initiative, highlighting the need to address the issue of under-trials accused of serious criminal offenses going scot-free due to a lack of adequate evidence to support convictions. The introduction of mobile forensic vans aims to tackle this challenge by equipping law enforcement agencies with state-of-the-art tools and equipment to collect and securely preserve crucial pieces of evidence.
The Chief Minister flagged off the first batch of seven mobile forensic vans, emphasizing that more of these vans will be provided to the police force in the near future. Each van will be allocated an adequate number of resource persons and forensic experts, ensuring the highest level of expertise at crime scenes. The deployment of these vans is expected to significantly improve Assam Police’s forensic evidence collection capabilities, ultimately leading to an increase in conviction rates.
Recognizing the importance of forensic evidence in the criminal justice system, Sarma stressed the need for a robust forensic science regime in the state. To this end, the government has already established three regional forensic science laboratories, with a fourth one in the pipeline. The development of these laboratories will further strengthen Assam’s ability to deal with various crimes, ranging from murder to drug trafficking.
Acknowledging the significance of specialized knowledge in forensic science, the Chief Minister disclosed that 400 police personnel from the state police force are currently undergoing training at the National Forensic Science University in Ahmedabad. The expertise gained through this training will prove invaluable in solving complex cases that require the application of sophisticated forensic science techniques.
With the introduction of these mobile forensic vans and the establishment of regional forensic science laboratories, Assam is taking concrete steps towards ensuring a more effective criminal justice system. By enabling prompt collection and preservation of vital pieces of evidence, these measures will aid law enforcement agencies in building stronger cases against criminals. As the implementation expands and more resources are allocated in the future, Assam can expect a significant boost in its conviction rates, leading to a safer and more secure society.
