Assam Government to Organize ‘Khel Maharan’ to Promote Sports Talents
The Assam government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has unveiled its plans to host ‘Khel Maharan’ starting from November 1. The decision was made during a state cabinet meeting held in New Delhi, with the main objective being to identify and nurture sports talents at the grassroots level. The government has allocated sufficient funds for organizing the event, which is expected to witness the participation of more than 50 lakh sportspersons across the state.
Khel Maharan will consist of competitions in five different sporting disciplines, namely Athletics (100m, 200m, 400m & 800m), Football, Kabaddi, Volleyball, and Kho-Kho. It will be held in four distinct age categories: Under 19 (Men), Under 19 (Women), Above 19 (Men), and Above 19 (Women). The competition will be conducted at various levels, starting from the Gram Panchayat/ULB/Wards level and extending to the District, Assembly Constituency, and State levels.
To ensure equal participation and coverage, state-level events will be organized in multiple locations, including Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Silchar, Kokrajhar, and Diphu. Each of these locations will host the final events of a specific sporting discipline. The entire Khel Maharan event is scheduled to run from November 1, 2021, to January 10, 2022.
The initiative aims to provide a platform for budding sportspersons to showcase their skills and talent. By conducting competitions at different levels, the Assam government is actively working to identify promising athletes and nurture their potential. Through this comprehensive sporting event, the government envisions creating an environment that encourages and fosters sportsmanship among the youth of Assam.
