The opposition party All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) in Assam is protesting the draft delimitation proposal for Assembly and Parliamentary seats, threatening to move the court if the plan is not shelved. The Election Commission of India (ECI) conducted the exercise instead of the Delimitation Commission due to amendments made by the previous government in 2008. AIUDF organisational general secretary and MLA Aminul Islam criticized Congress, saying the party prepared the blueprint for the delimitation exercise, and the BJP is now implementing it with an understanding between them. The ECI proposed altering the geographical boundaries of most constituencies, increasing Assembly seats reserved for Scheduled Castes to nine from eight and 19 from 16 for Scheduled Tribes. For Parliamentary constituencies, two have been proposed for ST category and one for SC community. The ECI had notified the draft delimitation document on June 20, which is supposed to be effective from 2026. The party will submit its opposition to the proposal by July 11 and meet the ECI delegation next month to present their objections.
