Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently launched the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020, calling it a historic day for the state. The launch ceremony was held at Guwahati University, and CM Sarma praised the higher education department and the university for taking the initiative towards implementing the NEP. He also expressed his admiration for the NEP, which he said paved the way for transformative changes in the education sector of the country.
Under the NEP, multi-disciplinary education and preparing students in a holistic and enabling environment are prioritized. For the first time, a liberal education policy has been introduced in Assam, which removes the rigid distinctions among the streams. The NEP also provides a set of guiding principles for a paradigm shift across the education sector in India from the school to doctoral level.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his grief over the Balasore train accident in Odisha and wished for a quick recovery of the injured. The NEP 2020 launched in July 2020 removes the tenth and twelfth board and follows a pattern of 5+3+3+4. Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu, Adviser to Education Dr. Nani Gopal Mahanta, and VC Gauhati University Prof. Pratap Jyoti Handique also spoke at the launch ceremony. The policy’s adoption marks a historic day for Assam and is a significant initiative towards academic excellence in the state.
