Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has raised an alarm over the issue of Rohingya infiltration in the state and has vowed to take action against the infiltrators. He referred to the situation as a threat to sovereignty during a press conference held on Saturday. Sarma expressed concerns about the network of brokers bringing Rohingyas into Assam through Tripura and emphasized that anyone entering the country without a passport or visa poses a threat to sovereignty.

The Chief Minister announced that Assam Police is collaborating with the Tripura Government to tackle the issue. He further outlined plans for the Assam Police to become one of the top 10 police forces in the country by 2026 through sustained reforms. The introduction of 400 crime scene officers, the upgrade of 250 patrolling stations into police stations, and the establishment of forensic laboratories in Silchar, Dibrugarh, and Bongaigaon were among the initiatives mentioned. Sarma also detailed efforts to fill all vacancies in Assam Police by April 1, 2024, aiming to achieve a zero-vacancy force.

In addition to these measures, the Chief Minister discussed plans to establish police canteens and schools in every district, similar to the concept of army canteens and schools. The involvement of police personnel’s wives in setting up model schools was highlighted as part of this endeavor. Sarma also emphasized the integration of auxiliary units under the Assam Police Headquarters for streamlined operations. Measures such as the digitization of general diary entries under CCTNS to prevent manipulation of investigations, infrastructure expansion of Guwahati Police, and an increase in police stations from 19 to 34 were mentioned.

To ensure an effective appeal is filed in the High Court, a legal advisor will be provided in cases where the prosecution loses in lower courts, according to the Chief Minister. Sarma also emphasized the need for immediate sale of seized gold jewelry and valuables to prevent dilution.

The article showcases the concerns raised by Assam’s Chief Minister regarding Rohingya infiltration and highlights his commitment to taking action against the infiltrators. It also provides details of the various reforms and initiatives planned by the Assam Police to strengthen the state’s law enforcement agencies. The Chief Minister’s determination to address these issues and safeguard the sovereignty of Assam is apparent throughout the article.
