A youth leader of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been arrested in Assam’s Sivasagar district for allegedly assaulting a couple who didn’t attend a party rally attended by its national president, JP Nadda. The youth leader, Angshuman Bora, reportedly went to the couple’s home and beat Purnima Sangma with a piece of wood, injuring her. Bora is a general secretary of the BJP’s Gaurisagar mandal unit. Tomas Sangma, Purnima’s husband, was also allegedly thrashed by Bora. The couple, who work as daily labourers, lodged a complaint with the police station following the incident. The attendance at the rally in Charing was reportedly below expectation, angering local BJP leaders.
