Assam Wrestling Association (AWA) has been granted membership of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), as confirmed by the Indian Olympic Association’s ad-hoc committee for wrestling. This significant development comes after AWA approached the Gauhati high court, resulting in the suspension of the national federation’s election.

The ad-hoc committee informed AWA that their membership application had been accepted, effective immediately. Bhupender Singh Bajwa, a member of the IOA’s ad-hoc committee for wrestling, expressed the decision in a letter addressed to the president of AWA. However, it’s important to note that this decision is subject to the outcome of a case filed by Assam Wrestling Association in the Hon’ble High Court of Gauhati.

Ratul Sharma, President of AWA, expressed his appreciation for the decision, stating that it rectifies the injustice faced by wrestlers in the state over the years. He further added that the state body has already completed all necessary membership formalities.

The acceptance of AWA’s membership application is a positive step forward for wrestling in the state of Assam. It is expected to provide aspiring wrestlers with greater opportunities and support from national and international platforms. The move also showcases the commitment of the Indian Olympic Association’s ad-hoc committee for wrestling in promoting the sport across different regions.

The decision is of significant importance for AWA, considering their efforts to safeguard the interests of wrestlers in the state. By securing membership in the Wrestling Federation of India, AWA aims to enhance the development of wrestling and nurture talent in Assam.

As the case filed by AWA remains pending in the Gauhati high court, the outcomes and potential implications of the court’s ruling still need to be assessed. However, the membership granted to AWA by the Wrestling Federation of India sends a positive signal and reflects the belief in the merit of AWA’s claims.

This latest development demonstrates the importance of national sports federations in recognizing and supporting talent from various states. With the inclusion of Assam Wrestling Association, the Wrestling Federation of India can work towards achieving wider representation and the overall growth of the sport.

Overall, the membership granted to AWA by the Wrestling Federation of India serves as a promising milestone for wrestlers in Assam. It not only highlights the importance of regional representation but also portrays a supportive and inclusive approach taken by national sports bodies like WFI.
