A court in Bandipora district has denied bail to an Assistant Sub Inspector of police who was implicated in a fake encounter case, following accusations that the accused detained and murdered civilians before presenting them as armed militants in exchange for money and awards. The accused had filed an application for bail on medical grounds in relation to the alleged staged murder of Ghulam Nabi Wani from Nowbug, Kokernag. Wani had previously been an informal vendor and was also killed during an alleged fake encounter in Sumbal Bandipora district in 2006. Evidence shows that he was passed off as Zulfikar Ahmad, a resident of Pakistan Controlled Kashmir, according to SIT charge sheet. The judge described the crime as “horrendous” due to the identity of the accused, all of whom are associated with the police, and said that any laxity in securing justice would erode public faith in the criminal justice system.
