Asia-Africa BlueTech Superhighway Project Boosts Fisheries Resilience and Livelihoods in Kenya

The Asia-Africa BlueTech Superhighway project, funded by the UK Government under the Climate and Ocean Adaptation and Sustainable Transition program, is set to enhance fisheries resilience and improve livelihoods in Kenya. WorldFish, a leading international research organization, is collaborating with partners to implement the project over a period of seven years, with Phase 1 focusing on Bangladesh, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, and Tanzania.

Globally, millions of individuals rely on small-scale fisheries and aquaculture for their livelihoods. However, these vital aquatic food systems face challenges such as insecure livelihoods for workers, limited capacity to adapt to climate change, and the degradation of marine ecosystems. The Asia-Africa BlueTech Superhighway project aims to tackle these issues by enabling communities to adapt to and mitigate the impacts of climate change, as well as manage marine and coastal resources sustainably.

WorldFish is currently seeking a Post-doctoral Fellow in Fisheries Assessment & Management to be based in Mombasa, Kenya. The ideal candidate should have an advanced degree in fisheries ecology, management, or a related field, along with extensive field experience in developing countries. A keen interest in digital innovation and a strong desire to make a difference are also essential qualifications.

The selected candidate will be responsible for implementing and coordinating the Kenya activities of the Digital COAST work package, which is part of the Asia-Africa BlueTech Superhighway project. This work package is funded by the UK Government and conducted in collaboration with the Wildlife Conservation Society and relevant agencies in Kenya, Tanzania, and Mozambique.

The position will involve working with fisheries, governance, gender, and nutrition specialists at national and international levels to achieve these objectives.

The post-doctoral fellow will play a crucial role in improving the understanding of fisheries dynamics, enhancing the resilience of coastal communities, promoting sustainable fisheries management, and ultimately ensuring food and nutritional security for the people of Kenya.

The position offers an attractive salary range and comprehensive benefits, including health insurance, life insurance, accident coverage, and long-term disability insurance.
