New Delhi’s Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, has urged officials of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to develop a detailed action plan to tackle water contamination in certain parts of the city, according to India News. Kejriwal also instructed officials to identify the root cause of the contamination and urged them to obtain detailed information from local legislators on the issue. Furthermore, Kejriwal directed officials to have Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants installed in 20 key jhuggi-jhopri clusters, to resolve water stress issues in these areas. The Delhi government plans to fit 500 RO plants with tubewells in water-stressed zones, including unauthorised colonies, in a bid to maximize clean water availability. Currently, these areas rely on water tankers for their water supply. The DJB has identified 1,075 locations in 12 assembly constituencies where approximately 1,428 tube wells will install. At present, the DJB provides just 1000 MGD despite residents needing 1,300 MGD of water for consumption and daily needs and plans to enhance supply to 1,200-1,300 MGD.
