The Indian Army has criticized the involvement of women activists in Manipur, who they say are deliberately blocking security forces’ movements and interfering in their operations. The army has highlighted various incidents of female-led mobs interfering in security force operations in the past. One example occurred last week when security forces had to release 12 cadres, including Lt Col Moirangthem Tamba, the mastermind behind a 2015 ambush killing 18 army personnel. The security forces made the decision to hand over all 12 cadres to the local leader after a mob of around 1,500 women, led by the local leader, surrounded the target area, stopping the operation in its tracks. Spear Corps of the Indian Army said such interference is detrimental to the timely response of security forces during critical moments. They appealed to all sections of the population to support their efforts in restoring peace in the region.
