Opposition MP Artsvik Minasyan has dismissed the Armenian government’s claims that there are no political prisoners in Armenia.
Assessments reveal that there are people imprisoned for political reasons in Armenia and no counterarguments have been provided, Minasyan, the secretary of the Hayastan faction, told parliamentary debates on the annual human rights defender’s report on Friday.
He underlined that no government in any country had ever acknowledged politically motivated detentions.
Minasyan stated opposition activists Vazgen Saghatelyan, Narek Samsonyan, Narek Malyan, RPA deputy chair Armen Ashotyan and ex-Vanadzor mayor Mamikon Aslanyan were held behind bars for political reasons.
Now those detained over protests in Tavush have been added to this list, said the opposition deputy.
