Arizona High School Football Community Mourns Player Who Died in Drowning

The Arizona high school football community is coming together to mourn the tragic loss of a 15-year-old player who drowned during a football camp. Christopher Hampton, a member of the Cesar Chavez High School football team, went missing on Monday while the team was at Lakeside Blue Ridge High for their summer camp in the White Mountains. The young athlete was later discovered dead in Show Low Lake.

In response to Hampton’s untimely death, Cesar Chavez football coach William Chipley expressed his sorrow and shared his fond memories of the player on social media. Chipley highlighted Hampton’s dedication to the sport and his infectious smile. The coach emphasized how students like Hampton are the reason he continues to coach football, adding that Christopher will forever live in their hearts.

Support for Cesar Chavez High School and the grieving football community quickly poured in on social media from other Arizona high school football teams. Perry High School from Gilbert extended their deepest sympathies and support to Hampton’s family, loved ones, and the entire Cesar Chavez community. Queen Creek High School football also sent their condolences, expressing solidarity with the Cesar Chavez football family.

The devastating news has touched not only the football community but also the broader Arizona sports community. Matt Horton, the father of a junior quarterback from Phoenix Pinnacle High, expressed his heartfelt condolences, emphasizing the unity of the football family. Similarly, Tucson Sabino senior defensive end Cedric Jackson Jr. and Tolleson basketball coach Andrew Enciso extended their thoughts and prayers to Christopher’s family and the Cesar Chavez program.

Many coaches, including Tempe Corona del Sol football coach Jake Barro, changed their Twitter profile pictures to Cesar Chavez Champions’ logo as a show of support for the grieving community. Todd Newman, a Cesar Chavez football parent, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of prayers, support, and love from the football community on Twitter.

The Phoenix Union High School District, along with Cesar Chavez High School, will fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation into the drowning incident. At this time, there is no information about any planned vigil or team gathering for Hampton and his family.

This tragic event serves as a reminder of the importance of water safety and supervision, especially during outdoor activities. The loss of a young athlete has deeply saddened the Arizona high school football community, highlighting the need for continued vigilance and support. As the investigation continues, thoughts and prayers are with Christopher Hampton’s family, friends, teammates, coaches, and the entire Cesar Chavez community during this difficult time.
