Apple Ends Samsung’s 12-Year Run as World’s Top Smartphone Seller

Apple’s iPhone has claimed the title of the world’s best-selling smartphone, bringing an end to Samsung’s 12-year dominance, according to data from the International Data Corporation (IDC). In 2023, Apple sold 234.6 million units, surpassing Samsung’s 226.6 million units. The IDC revealed that Apple captured a 20.1 percent market share, edging ahead of Samsung’s 19.4 percent. Analysts attribute Apple’s success to the popularity of its premium devices, such as the iPhone, and the increasingly fragmented market for Android smartphones. Emerging competitors like Transsion, Xiaomi, Honor, and Google have also contributed to Samsung’s decline. Furthermore, Huawei’s strong performance in China has impacted Samsung’s sales. Despite a global decline in smartphone shipments by 3.2 percent to 1.17 billion units in 2023, the IDC predicts a recovery in the industry for 2024. Samsung is set to unveil its latest models at an event in California on Wednesday.
