Apple has announced a new security feature designed to protect iPhone users from thieves attempting to access their personal data. The feature, known as Stolen Device Protection, adds an extra layer of security by requiring biometric data, such as a face scan or fingerprint, in addition to the passcode.
Currently, iPhone users can access highly sensitive information and make significant changes to their device’s settings using just a passcode. This typically four or six-digit code allows users to unlock their devices, view credit card information, and access stored passwords. However, if a thief manages to obtain the passcode, they can gain unrestricted access to the user’s data.
With the introduction of Stolen Device Protection, Apple aims to address this vulnerability. Even if a thief gets hold of the passcode, they will be unable to access the user’s data without also providing biometric data through Face ID or Touch ID. This additional layer of protection ensures that unauthorized individuals are unable to retrieve sensitive information from stolen iPhones.
For certain actions that require heightened security, such as changing an Apple ID password, adding or removing biometric scanning options, deactivating Find My iPhone, or disabling the stolen device protection feature, users will be prompted to provide biometric data and then wait for an hour-long security delay before confirming the changes with biometric data again.

In the rare cases where a thief can observe the user entering the passcode and then steal the device, Stolen Device Protection adds a sophisticated new layer of protection.
The additional security measures are only activated when a user is away from familiar locations such as their workplace or home. These familiar locations are automatically learned and stored by the device, allowing for a seamless user experience while maintaining robust security.
While the feature is currently only available to beta testers, it will be rolled out to all iPhone users as part of an upcoming software update. Users will have the choice to opt into the Stolen Device Protection feature and enjoy enhanced security for their personal data.
