American racing looks destined to have more representation on the Formula 1 grid if Andretti get their way. That’s after former world champion Mario Andretti appeared at Sunday’s Miami Grand Prix and reiterated plans to join the sport in the coming seasons. The American brand has been repeatedly linked with F1 in recent years but is yet to announce any concrete plans to take a seat. However, Andretti Sr – who was crowned the king of F1 in 1978 – was in attendance at the Miami International Autodrome this weekend and indicated he hopes his team will join up as soon as 2026. He spoke with Sky Sports reporter Martin Brundle and appeared hopeful about finally getting his foot in the door as an owner. Well, I can say we’re working every day on it, said the 84-year-old. We’re ready to meet whatever challenge there is, just tell us what and we’re in because we’re preparing in every possible way and our intention is to be on the grid in 2026. When pushed by Brundle on whether that vision was realistic, Andretti Sr – who also raced in NASCAR and IndyCar – replied: Oh absolutely, 100%. We’re working on it already so we can show you. What do you think is the ideal amount of F1 teams? Let us know in the comments section below. The racing mogul was also asked about the help Andretti received from the United States Congress to potentially receive their ticket to F1. A dozen members of Congress wrote a letter to F1’s owner, Liberty Media, for answers as to why Andretti’s ownership bid has yet to be accepted. Well obviously, that was because of Formula 1, Andretti Sr continued. They had an exhibition of Red Bull on Pennsylvania Avenue and then many members of Congress knew more than I ever thought about our flight so they asked me to come there and explain why we’re not allowed yet, so that was the case. Mario’s son, Michael Andretti, was also in attendance at the Miami GP and rubbed elbows with some senior figures of the current grid. This comes only a few days after he remarked that he never thought [Andretti would] have to fight, to beg for the team to land a spot in F1.
