Andretti Cadillac Faces Skepticism as Formula 1 Considers 11th Team Addition
In a surprising turn of events, Formula 1 team representatives in Las Vegas have expressed skepticism and coolness towards the addition of Andretti Cadillac to the grid. Even on Michael Andretti’s home turf, the United States, the reception hasn’t been welcoming.
Earlier this week, Cadillac made an announcement that they had officially registered to become a power unit supplier to Formula 1 starting in 2028, ideally with Andretti Cadillac. However, this move did little to boost the Andretti bid, as Formula 1 itself still needs to approve the addition of an 11th team. Ultimately, the decision lies with F1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali and Liberty Media head Greg Maffei, who are yet to give their final verdict. Andretti’s goal is to enter Formula 1 as early as 2025.
Mercedes team principal, Toto Wolff, seemed far from enthusiastic when asked about the Andretti Cadillac entry. He acknowledged that General Motors (GM) is a major player, but stressed that the Commercial Rights Holder’s opinion on the matter holds significance. He pointed out that adding an 11th team could lead to dilution and financial implications for many teams. Without concrete data showcasing the benefits of such an addition, Wolff remained cautious.
While team principals don’t have a formal vote on the matter, they do have the ear of Stefano Domenicali. Ferrari team principal, Frederic Vasseur, welcomed the idea of a new engine supplier like GM but highlighted that the 11th team addition is a separate issue. His focus lies on the engine supplier’s potential contribution to Formula 1.
James Vowles of Williams showed support for GM’s involvement in the sport, believing it could benefit the overall growth. However, he remained skeptical about adding an 11th team, as it could impact his own team’s finances, which is where his priorities lie.
The decision to include Andretti Cadillac in Formula 1 rests on various factors, including the financial implications and the overall attractiveness of the sport. Team principals like Wolff, Vasseur, and Vowles have voiced their personal opinions on the matter, with different perspectives and priorities at play.
It remains to be seen how Formula 1 and its stakeholders will analyze the potential benefits and drawbacks of adding Andretti Cadillac to the grid. The sport’s global fanbase eagerly awaits the final decision, which will undoubtedly shape the future of Formula 1.
