Andhra Pradesh’s Increasing Debt Crisis Sparks Call for Intervention by BJP
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Andhra Pradesh has raised concerns regarding the state’s mounting debt crisis and has submitted a memorandum to Governor S. Abdul Nazeer, urging his intervention to address the alleged financial irregularities committed by the government. The BJP leaders claim that the government’s actions have led to the state being trapped in a substantial debt of ₹7,44,000 crore over the past four years.
When combined with the previous Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government’s debt of ₹3,68,000 crore, the total debt burden on the state amounts to a staggering ₹10,77,000 crore, according to the BJP. The party also questions the state government’s claims of achieving significant improvements in the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP), asserting that there has been a lack of investment flow under the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) since it came to power in 2019. In fact, they argue that investments have been withdrawn due to the unfavorable business atmosphere in the state.
The BJP leaders further allege that the government has been raising debts through corporations that generate no income. They also accuse the government of being responsible for the deaths caused by the consumption of cheap liquor and the diversion of funds meant for government employees and gram panchayats. Additionally, they claim that government assets, such as circuit houses, bus depots, collectorates, roads and buildings, and police quarters, are being mortgaged to compensate for the drain on the state’s finances.
In light of these concerns, the BJP leaders have called on the Governor to intervene and direct the state government to release a White Paper detailing the borrowings, outstanding payments, mortgaged assets, and fund diversions. By doing so, they hope to bring transparency and accountability to the financial situation in Andhra Pradesh.
The BJP delegation that met with the Governor included prominent party leaders such as D. Purandeswari, Y. Satya Kumar, S. Vishnuvardhan Reddy, Vakati Narayana Reddy, C. Adinarayana Reddy, and P.V.N. Madhav.
It remains to be seen how the state government will respond to these allegations and whether they will address the issues raised by the opposition party. In the meantime, the mounting debt crisis in Andhra Pradesh continues to be of great concern, with the opposition demanding appropriate measures to address the situation and ensure the state’s financial stability.
