Amsterdam’s Unique Skatepark Breaks Barriers for LGBTQ Skaters

Amsterdam, known for its liberal attitudes, is home to a groundbreaking skatepark that is breaking barriers for LGBTQ skaters. Nestled in the vibrant heart of the city, this unique skatepark offers a safe space for LGBTQ individuals and female skaters, challenging the long-standing challenges of sexism, homophobia, and an overly masculine culture in the sport.

The skatepark, located within a warehouse, proudly displays the message Skateboarding is for Everyone on its walls, along with a rainbow-hued emblem that represents inclusivity. LGBTQ skateboarders like Tem, a 22-year-old food volunteer, find comfort and acceptance in this space, free from judgment and the often uncomfortable atmosphere of public skateparks.

Skateboarding, often associated with rebellion and counterculture, has struggled to overcome prejudices and create an inclusive environment. However, the Netherlands, a country known for its progressive policies and diverse acceptance, aims to change this narrative.

Flip Zonne Zuijderland, the 25-year-old manager of the skatepark, emphasizes the importance of creating a space where everyone can be themselves and have fun. While there have been efforts to promote skateboarding for women in countries like Afghanistan and the Palestinian territories, not much has been done specifically for LGBTQ skaters until now. The Amsterdam skatepark, a collaboration between Women Skate the World and New Wave, may be the first of its kind in the world.

While there has been progress in accepting women and LGBTQ athletes in skateboarding, the sport still has a long way to go. The existence of this skatepark provides hope for an up-and-coming generation of skaters who may have been discouraged by the sport’s aggressive and exclusive reputation.

The origins of the skatepark can be traced back to the initial summer of the Covid pandemic when informal skate sessions brought LGBTQ skaters together. As the group grew, they realized the need for their own dedicated space. With the help of donations and public funding, they transformed an empty warehouse into a safe haven for skateboarders.

The skatepark aims to foster an atmosphere of respect above all else. It is open to people of all sexual orientations and gender identities, as long as they are there to have a good time and make others feel welcome. The focus is on creating a positive and inclusive community within the skateboarding world.

By offering a safe space for LGBTQ skaters and female skaters alike, the Amsterdam skatepark is pioneering a new era of inclusivity in skateboarding. It serves as a reminder that the sport should be open to all, regardless of gender or sexual orientation. As the skateboarding community continues to evolve, it is crucial to foster acceptance and create environments where individuals can truly be themselves.
