The National Super League (NSL) clash between Gusii FC and Murang’a Seal took an unexpected turn when an ill-equipped ambulance caused a two-hour delay before the kick-off. Despite the setback, both teams displayed their determination and battled to a thrilling 2-2 draw in their final match of the season.

Originally scheduled to begin at 1pm, the match at Awendo Greens Stadium in Migori was significantly delayed due to the absence of a fully equipped ambulance. Murang’a Seal, who were vying for the NSL title with Shabana, refused to take the field, citing the lack of essential equipment, including a defibrillator, in the ambulance provided by the Migori County Government.

Shabana secured the NSL title with a convincing 2-0 victory over Kisumu All Stars at Gusii Stadium in Kisii, amassing a total of 73 points. Murang’a Seal settled for second place with 69 points after the draw against Gusii FC. Despite already knowing that Shabana had claimed the championship, both teams showcased their relentless spirit and fought fiercely throughout the match.

The match officials, referee Brooke Philip, assistant referees Walter Maritime and Joshua Owino, and reserve referee Kevin Amol, returned to the dressing room after waiting for an hour without a suitable replacement ambulance being provided. They later resumed the match, engaging in discussions with officials from both teams while awaiting further instructions from the Football Kenya Federation (FKF).

The delay frustrated the fans, who criticized the poor organization of the match. Many felt that there was ample time to prepare for the game, but the necessary arrangements were neglected.

Finally, a fully equipped ambulance arrived a few minutes before 3pm, allowing the match to kick off. Both Gusii FC and Murang’a Seal had adopted the slogan the last dance to inspire their supporters. After successfully securing promotion to the next season’s Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKF-PL), the two teams had been competing for the NSL title. Murang’a Seal had previously upset Shabana with a 2-1 victory, adding an extra layer of intensity to their final clash.

Seal took the lead in the 24th minute through Brian Juma’s lob, capitalizing on a failed clearance by Gusii’s goalkeeper Bernard Onunga. Despite missed opportunities, Gusii managed to equalize before halftime, with Emmanuel Omwenga taking advantage of poor defending from the visitors to score from close range.

The intensity continued in the second half, as Kevin Elegwa capitalized on a mistake by Murang’a’s goalkeeper and put Gusii in the lead just four minutes after the restart. Tempers flared during the match, resulting in Gusii team manager Hillary Team and Brian Odhiambo both receiving red cards. Fabian Adikiny rescued a point for Murang’a Seal with an equalizer six minutes before the final whistle.

Seal’s coach, Vincent Nyaberi, expressed his frustration with the delayed start, believing that it impacted the outcome of the match. Nevertheless, he commended his players for their efforts and looked forward to competing in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League.

The match between Gusii FC and Murang’a Seal exemplified their fighting spirit and determination, despite the challenges faced. While the delay caused inconvenience and frustration, both teams ultimately showcased their talent and passion for the game. The draw marked the end of an eventful season for these teams, setting the stage for their future endeavors in the premier league.
