India’s poverty largely stems from ecological issues, and tackling environmental degradation is key to reducing poverty levels, according to Richard Mahapatra, an environmentalist and Managing Editor of Down To Earth. Mahapatra delivered the Mahesh Buch Remembrance Lecture in Bhopal on the issue, saying that until 2019, India was making notable progress in reducing poverty, but the COVID-19 pandemic has eroded many of those gains. Mahapatra highlighted that roughly 25% of India’s population earns just INR37-47 ($0.51 to $0.65) per day, with many living in areas with poor natural resources. Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh have 60% of India’s 134m impoverished people, with 76% of people in Madhya Pradesh’s Alirajpur district living below the poverty line. India’s forest cover is linked to poverty, with a higher coverage corresponding with greater levels of deprivation.
