An Albuquerque man has been arrested for the murder of a transgender woman, whose body was found bound in a drainage tunnel. Jose Mendoza-Espinoza, 29, is facing charges of murder and tampering with evidence in relation to the death of 35-year-old Sherlyn Marjorie. Marjorie was reported missing in September and her body was discovered by a search party. Investigators identified Mendoza-Espinoza through surveillance footage and he confessed to having a two- to three-year-long affair with Marjorie. He claimed that she tried to extort money from him and threatened to reveal their affair. Mendoza-Espinoza admitted to having sex with Marjorie before an altercation occurred, resulting in her death. The case is being investigated as a murder and not a hate crime, although it highlights the violence and discrimination faced by transgender individuals.
