Chantelle de Jonge Reflects on Introduction to Legislature

Chestermere Strathmore MLA, Chantelle de Jonge, took a moment to look back on her first few months in office after being elected into her seat at the Legislature earlier this year. De Jonge replaced former United Conservative Party (UCP) MLA Leela Aheer, who decided not to run again in the previous election.

Reflecting on her time in office, de Jonge acknowledged that the past six months had been busy as there was much to learn. However, she highlighted the accomplishments of the government and expressed excitement for the plans ahead in the coming year.

One notable achievement de Jonge mentioned was the successful budget balancing for the second consecutive year back in March. She also mentioned hosting the Southern Alberta Budget Town Hall alongside Minister Nate Horner, which provided an opportunity to hear directly from Albertans.

Since her election, de Jonge has assumed the role of parliamentary secretary for affordability and utilities. In this capacity, she has echoed the UCP’s messaging regarding conflicts between the province and the Liberal-led Government of Canada. She raised concerns about the federal government’s increasing interference in areas beyond its jurisdiction.

De Jonge pointed out two significant decisions that occurred this year, which she believes are significant wins for Alberta. The first decision was the federal court ruling that deemed the federal government’s definition of plastics as unconstitutional and unreasonable. The second decision came from the Supreme Court, which declared Bill C69 unconstitutional. These victories have highlighted the province’s ongoing fight against the federal government in various areas, including clean energy regulations and electricity markets.

On a more personal level, de Jonge is advocating for the construction of additional schools and the development of safer roads for commuters in the Chestermere Strathmore constituency. She also expressed support for her party’s efforts to reform the provincial healthcare system and defend against federal clean energy regulations.

De Jonge emphasized the importance of opposing clean electricity regulations that she believes would negatively impact the province’s unique electricity grid. She stated, We’re not going to let Albertans freeze in the dark, full stop, reaffirming her commitment to standing up against the NDP Liberal Alliance.

As de Jonge continues her work in the Legislature, she remains focused on supporting her party’s actions and defending the interests of her constituents. Balancing a busy schedule and a steep learning curve, she is determined to make a positive impact and contribute to the government’s goals.

Overall, de Jonge’s reflection on her introduction to the legislature and her goals moving forward demonstrates a commitment to advocating for the needs and concerns of her constituents while aligning with her party’s priorities.
