Albanese Government Takes Comprehensive Approach to Eliminate Cervical Cancer
In a groundbreaking move, the Albanese Labor Government of Australia has taken the lead in the global fight against cervical cancer. With the release of the National Strategy for the Elimination of Cervical Cancer and a whopping $48.2 million investment, Australia aims to become the first country to eradicate this deadly disease. The government’s strategic approach focuses on improving access to screening and follow-up services, as well as enhancing data access for targeted vaccination efforts.
The National Strategy, developed by the Australian Centre for the Prevention of Cervical Cancer, encompasses ambitious targets and complements the Albanese Government’s Australian Cancer Plan. By 2035, the goal is to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health issue in Australia. To achieve this, the government will extend the 90% HPV vaccination target to boys, ensuring comprehensive protection against HPV for all children. Additionally, the screening target of 70% will now span 5-yearly participation for individuals aged 25 to 74, broadening the scope beyond the previous twice in a lifetime approach.
Approaching the issue with inclusivity in mind, the National Strategy places a special focus on priority populations such as First Nations people, individuals with disabilities, those residing in rural and remote areas, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, and the LGBTIQA+ community. An allocation of $8.3 million has been dedicated to implementing innovative screening models that cater to these specific communities.
To address the significant disparities faced by First Nations women, the government has assigned $12.7 million to the National Aboriginal Community-Controlled Health Organisation. This funding will improve access to cervical screening for First Nations women, bringing screening services closer to their local communities.
Recognizing the importance of global collaboration, the Albanese Government is making a new investment of up to $12.5 million to the Elimination Partnership in the Indo-Pacific for Cervical Cancer (EPICC). This investment is part of the Partnerships for a Healthy Region initiative and aims to share Australia’s world-leading expertise with governments in the Pacific and Southeast Asia. By establishing HPV vaccine programs, expanding screening and treatment, and strengthening health workforce capacity, EPICC will play a crucial role in the fight against cervical cancer in the region.
The new National Strategy and investments build upon other initiatives to eliminate cervical cancer, such as the introduction of self-collected Cervical Screening Tests. These tests have proven instrumental in addressing barriers to screening for various demographics, including women who have experienced sexual violence, LGBTIQA+ individuals, and culturally and linguistically diverse and First Nations communities.
Australia’s commitment to eliminating cervical cancer resonates with global efforts, with support already provided to the region through Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and sexual and reproductive health initiatives.
