Joseph Emerson, the Alaska Airlines pilot accused of attempting to shut off the engines of a passenger plane mid-flight, has been indicted on 84 counts in an Oregon court. The grand jury indicted Emerson on one count of endangering aircraft in the first degree and 83 counts of recklessly endangering another person, corresponding to each person on board during the October incident. While his attorneys applauded the decision not to charge him with attempted murder, they expressed disappointment, emphasizing that Emerson had no criminal intent. Emerson’s defense team stated that he thought he was in a dream and his actions were an attempt to wake up and return home to his family. The spokesperson for the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office described the grand jury process, explaining that jurors found Emerson to have recklessly endangered lives rather than acting with intent to murder. Prosecutors revealed that Emerson claimed to have consumed magic mushrooms prior to the incident. He is set to be arraigned on December 7 and also faces similar federal charges.
